Dinner at eight

“She gets too hungry for dinner at eight…” is the start of a tongue in cheek song made popular by the legendary Frank Sinatra in the movie musical Pal Joey. It is the one song that I always think of when dining “late” at a restaurant that has that has a certain cool about it. Recently, I was invited for dinner at eight at The Foundry, an intimate new spot featuring a serviceable and varied menu of beautifully made and presented deconstructed comfort food.

When dining at eight or later I like the experience to be sophisticated and chic - an occasion - especially if it is an evening after a rushed day at work. Owned and operated by husband and wife team, Mureed and Nataly, The Foundry strikes just the right chord of uptown sophistication and downtown cool. The urban industrial décor is clean and carefully curated. The space features wonderfully thought through touches like upholstered navy leather banquets and raw features like inlaid knife blades on the dining surface.

My companion, well acquainted with the venue and menu, chose a varied selection of tasty starters, mains and sides. The Foundry true to its evocative name has a menu full of fresh meats - cut to share, simply garnished and generously portioned. Out of the two sides we selected I honed in on the salade niçoise which was plated whimsically with a focus on the thickly sliced tuna.

My companion wisely requested that all plates be left on the table for later visitation as our mains of trimmed lamb lifted by rosemary, wagyu beef and a perfectly filleted, super-fresh, buttery, light local seabass arrived on table. These offerings were accompanied by a variety of selected sauces including an amazing aioli delightful enough to sell a small child for, grilled asparagus which added a welcome pop of color and texture to the plate, and a lady like pot of the baddest truffle mac n’ cheese which demanded my companion and I engage in a heartfelt “fork toast” - clink, clink– mmmmm!

After dinner we went up to the hand crafted bar to join a comfortable mix of erudite clientele of all ages and backgrounds in handcrafted cocktails. Just my style!

The Foundry is a truly “monogramed” eatery, speaking to the time, talent and passion of the owners. You’ll never too hungry for dinner at eight – especially at The Foundry.
